Discover a creative approach to goldwork embroidery with this special workshop celebrating Shrewsbury Museum’s exhibition of the Shropshire Marches Sun Pendant.
Inspired by this beautiful and rare object, you will discover how you can open up a world of possibilities to explore the beautiful art form of metal thread embroidery. This workshop gives embroiderers of all levels of experience the opportunity to get creative and enjoy a contemporary approach to the goldwork techniques couching and chipping.
Throughout the workshop you will build up a series of hand embroidery samples and small pieces inspired by the sun pendant which can become a ‘tool kit’ of techniques to further your creativity, and add your own unique flair to the a special kit designed to celebrate the ‘Gathering Light’ exhibition.
Hanny’s goldwork embroidery workshops are a balance of technique and experimentation, leaving plenty of ‘breathing space’ for you to find your own response to the historical techniques of goldwork.
Suitable for all abilities Ages 16 and over.
Course fee includes a Sun Pendant embroidery kit with a selection of finest quality British made threads and a one off Sun Pendant Design. You may wish to bring your own embroidery scissors.
Hanny Newton is an artist specialising in a contemporary approach to metal thread work. She is inspired by the rich heritage of the goldwork and seeks to find her own intuitive approach to this centuries-old art form, and loves inspiring other to do the same.
She studied at the Royal School of Needlework and Falmouth University and currently works from her studio in Shropshire, working on a combination of her own works and private commissions. She teaches her contemporary approach to goldwork from her studio and at institutions nationwide including the British Museum, Kings College London and West Dean College.
